In this lecture, architect Meritxell Inaraja will explore the concept of grafting as an architectural metaphor, focusing on the connection between the past and the future. This idea, based on uniting two seemingly unrelated parts, allows for rethinking how new architecture can sensitively integrate into historical structures and pre-existing spaces.

Meritxell Inaraja

Architect since 1994 from the Barcelona School of Architecture and holder of a Postgraduate degree in Museography and Design from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.

Since 1995, she has led her own studio, carrying out projects and works of all scales, with a focus on cultural facilities and the rehabilitation of historic buildings. Notable works include the restoration of the walls of Vic, the Garraf archive, the castle of La Tossa de Montbui, and the restoration of the Unió de Cooperadors de Gavà, a work by Josep Lluís Sert, which have been recognized in the FAD Awards and the European Heritage Award. Her rehabilitation of La Seca in Barcelona has received multiple awards and was featured in the Catalonia pavilion at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale.

She is also an associate professor of Projects VII and Restoration Projects at the Architecture Studies program of the University of Girona. She has taught courses and delivered lectures in various cities across Spain, France, Italy, Mexico, and New York.

Meritxell Inaraja has served on the Heritage Commission of the Government of Catalonia and the Architecture Commission of the Barcelona City Council. Currently, she is a member of the Scientific Committee of the UIA World Congress 2026.
