The exhibition Jocs a l’Ombra aims to synthesize, through a play on words, three of the most significant characteristics of Manuel Valls Vergés’ life: his playful nature, as solitary as it was full of humor; his architecture and photography, where light was always a central element in both design and focus; and the fact that he led a professional life in the shadow of Josep Antoni Coderch, despite being office partners for over 20 years.
The exhibition celebrates the donation of the archive made by the architect’s heirs this year to the Historical Archive of the College of Architects of Catalonia (COAC).
This exhibition is the 31st in the “Col·leccions” series, which began in 2015, showcasing materials held by the Historical Archive with the aim of promoting the rich documentary heritage of COAC. Since 1969, the Historical Archive has been responsible for recovering and preserving the documentary heritage generated by architects and the world of architecture. It currently holds the collections of over 180 architects, mainly due to donations, which have allowed it to grow continuously, making it one of the most important documentation centers in Europe, with over two million documents.
The exhibition is supported by Cerámicas Ferrés, Gradhermetic, Isist Atelier, and Marset.
Manuel Valls Vergés
(1912-2000) remained active in his professional life until shortly before his death. He was a figure who spent much of his career in the shadow of the well-known fame of Josep Antoni Coderch, despite sharing an office. Their collaboration began in 1940 and lasted until 1971, more than 20 years of joint projects.
Both were members of the *Grup R*, a space for reflection and architectural philosophy, united by the common principle of advocating for a functional, honest, and environmentally respectful architecture, while also being innovative in design.
