To Inhabit and Build. Peris+Toral Arquitectes

The Tarragona Department of the College of Architects of Catalonia offers a face-to-face lecture where we will have the opportunity to hear architect José Toral of PERIS+TORAL ARQUITECTES, who will explain the approach his studio takes in its projects, addressing the climate emergency and housing issues from a perspective of integral sustainability. They emphasize the interrelationship of environmental, economic, and social aspects to develop efficient architectural solutions. Key strategies include “increasing intermediate spaces” with buildings featuring bioclimatic courtyards and atriums, “reducing” materials and resources following the three R’s rule, and “sharing” spaces to encourage social interaction and collaborative economy. These principles are reflected in their most recent projects, seeking viable, sustainable, and equitable architecture.

The architectural studio PERIS+TORAL ARQUITECTES, based in Barcelona and founded by Marta Peris and José Toral, is dedicated to researching new ways of living associated with innovative construction methods. José Toral teaches at the ETSAB UPC in Barcelona, Polytechnic University of Catalonia, as an associate professor. Together with Marta Peris, they have taught at POLIMI in Milan and are currently guest professors at EPFL in Lausanne.

Their work has been recognized with the RIBA INTERNATIONAL AWARD 2024, the DETAIL AWARD 2024, the Spanish Architecture Award CSCAE 2022, and they were finalists for the EU MIES AWARD 2022. Their projects have been exhibited at the “Cité de l’Architecture” in Paris 2022, Seoul 2021, the Spanish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2016, and the UIA Tokyo 2011, among others.
